Whether they are being exposed to refugees firsthand, or just seeing images
of them splashed across newspaper pages, Europeans are well aware of the vast
numbers of desperate people trying to enter EU territory by any means possible.
But this awareness has yet to translate into a unified response.
Adam Smith famously wrote of the “invisible hand,” by which individuals’
pursuit of self-interest in free, competitive markets advances the interest of
society as a whole. But, because we can be manipulated, deceived, or even just
passively tempted, free markets also persuade us to buy things that are good
neither for us nor for society.
